Aubrey Dunning, MS in Professional Counseling, LCAS-A

Executive Director, Board Member

Aubrey Dunning birthday photo

This year we are celebrating Aubrey’s 25th birthday — officially, on the record, and without anyone here being reckless enough to suggest a different number.

While the rest of us are barely keeping up with one thing at a time, Aubrey is usually managing ten: on the phone with a nervous intake, calling back a family member, checking on a client, backing up a staff member, and putting out fires the rest of us don’t even know about yet.

The calm people see on the surface only exists because she holds a ton of chaos behind it. Clients feel that. Families feel that. Staff feel that. Things work here because she keeps showing up, even on the days when any sane person would run for the door.

So for this very serious, completely accurate 25th birthday, we want to say it clearly: Happy Birthday, Aubrey. Thank you for answering the phone, taking the hard conversations, and keeping this whole place from sinking.

Brett Dunning, MA, LCAS, CCS

Clinical Director, Board Member

IMG 1781Brett Dunning is the Clinical Director and specializes in facilitating the principles of the twelve steps in a manner that easily assimilates clients into 12-step recovery communities. Brett’s personal experiences with chemical dependency coupled with his unique utilization of cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT) assists clients who suffer from self-deception in the realms of chemical dependency and other maladaptive thinking patterns. Through motivational interviewing therapy techniques, Brett has the ability to assist those with chemical dependency issues by changing embedded and untruthful negative beliefs.

Over 10 years ago at Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies, Brett interned on the Silkworth Unit. There he was coached to gain the understanding that those who suffer from addiction are “Good people with a bad disease.” Brett’s mission is to assist his clientele to recognize this simple statement fully. Brett’s clinical methodologies assist his clientele to begin the process of change; the recovery process is not just about the cessation of mood-altering substances. The clinical methodologies used to assist the clientele to reduce the psychological and cognitive weight of self-deception, lack of self-esteem, internal anger (self-hatred) and assist the client in reducing the demon of shame.

Brett earned his associate’s degree in Social Science in 2010, his bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2011 from Kutztown University, and his master’s degree from Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies in 2012. Brett has worked at multiple treatment centers, including being a Clinical Director, around the country and takes pride in the fact that he consulted on the licensure, establishment, and training of employees at multiple “ground level” drug and alcohol treatment centers.

Kolby Underwood, LCMHC-A, LCAS-A

Therapist

Kolby is a passion therapist at Changing Tides, who works with those who battle addiction, while addressing the mental health conditions that tag along—anxiety, depression, PTSD, and the wear-and-tear of stress. His style is direct, compassionate, and practical. He blends motivational interviewing, solution focused, and cognitive-behavioral therapy with trauma-informed care, focusing on what measurably moves the dial for each client. In groups, Kolby builds trust and cohesion, then gets to work with skills practice, relapse-prevention planning, and structured feedback, so patients leave with tools that can be used even outside of addiction.

An Elizabeth City, NC native, Kolby moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina after graduating college, where he found his calling in substance-use treatment. He later returned home to Currituck County to serve patients and families in the community that shaped him. He earned his B.S. at East Carolina University and his M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Montreat College. He holds associate licensure in clinical mental health and substance use counseling (LCMHC-A, LCAS-A) and is credentialed as a National Board-Certified Counselor (NCC).

Clinical interests include men’s mental health, family systems, and building sustainable routines that support sobriety outside program hours. When he’s not in session, Kolby is happily never actually completing projects in his woodworking shop, following ECU athletics (go Pirates), getting his hopes up again for the Carolina Panthers (they will be better this year, he is sure of it), or fishing (not catching)—sometimes all three in the same weekend.
